In the spring of 1459, during a prolonged stay in Siena, Pope Pius II received a number of embassies from the rulers of Europe declaring obedience to the Apostolic See and to the new pope on behalf of their lord. One of the embassies was a joint embassy from a Duke of Bavaria, the Margraves of Brandenburg, and an Archduke of Austria. His brief reply to the oration of the ambassadors, has five themes: supremacy of the Roman Church; legitimacy of an elected pope; praise of the princes declaring their obedience; needful contribution of these princes to the projected crusade against the Turks; benevolence of pope and cardinals towards the princes
